Newsletter #6 – August 2017

We are celebrating! Umalusi has granted accreditation to Eastside Primary School. The team did amazing work from preparing documents, doing a desk top submission right through to the site visit of the evaluation team. Thank you teachers, office staff, Franki and Christine as well as the back-up from Eastside Community Church. Our thanks go to our Heavenly Father for His hand of blessing on the whole process. Accreditation means that we have the capacity as an independent school to offer teaching and systems procedures at the required standard to prepare learners for the next phase.

Mini cricketers are preparing for the matches that begin on the 19 August 2017. Learners practice during school time on Tuesdays and Thursdays.

A cricket letter for Grade R to Grade 4 was sent home last week. Please read this and respond so that teams can be finalized for the first match.

Mini – Cricket is the responsibility of parents to run, get the children to matches and umpire during the match. There are parents who trained earlier this year to do this. The first match will be as much a first for the children as for the parents!

Staff Training

During the holidays the staff trained for two days. The first training session was a workshop on how to bring a Christ focus in the school. Dalene Rayburn led the staff through a devotion that urged them to use the keys that God has given to make them effective – the keys of wonder, wisdom, leverage and love.

Different speakers helped to bring into focus…

  • the need for Biblically integrated planning before teaching. –  Marina Louw
  •  working with parents and grandparents in a Christ centered learning environment.  –  Dr Debbie Warren
  • Living a Christ centered life as an example to learners and parents. – Jo-Ann Jones
  • Integrating creation, fruitfulness and learning into a Biblical framework. Mia Marsay

What we learnt was not new, but a challenge to remember and use our knowledge in the school to the benefit of learners and parents. A workshop on the practical application of this for Eastside School rounded off the day, with teachers giving ideas of how to be fruitful and effective in keeping a Christ Focus with the learners and parents. This workshop also prepared material for the writing of the Spiritual Formation Policy.

The second workshop was led by Warrant Officer Nel and his co-worker, Collette, from Garsfontein Police Station’s Trauma Unit. The staff was informed of the role of the unit, the reporting of problems and what is expected from a school in terms of protection for learners.
